The Surinam Cherry (Eugenia uniflora), also commonly known as the pitanga, Brazilian cherry, or Suriname cherry, is a large evergreen shrub or small tree native to tropical South America. It is widely grown both for its ornamental appeal and its unique edible fruits.
Key Characteristics
Appearance: It features glossy, aromatic green foliage, with new leaf growth often emerging in coppery-bronze or pinkish shades. It produces small, delicate white flowers followed by distinctive, deeply ribbed, pumpkin-shaped berries.
Fruit Varieties & Ripening: The fruit changes color as it matures, going from green to orange, bright red, and eventually to a deep maroon or near-black ("black cherry" varieties).
Flavor Profile: The flavor is sweet-tart and complex, combining fruitiness with a distinct, slightly resinous or peppery back-note.
